Frequently Asked Questions

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

Our brand new cake shop is located inside Wincey Mills at 31 Mechanic St, Paris ON. We are open to the public from 9:00am-5:00pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Custom orders, such as wedding cakes, can be delivered anywhere within 60 minutes from our store. At this time we are not accepting cake orders on days when the store is closed. 

DO YOU REQUIRE A DEPOSIT?

A deposit of 50% is required to secure the dates for all orders. After agreeing on a design, an electronic estimate will be sent with a breakdown of costs and instructions on how to book. Unfortunately dates cannot be secured without a deposit. Estimates are only valid for 48 hours.

DO YOU OFFER CAKE SAMPLES?

Cake & Crumb offers samplings in the form of cupcakes for wedding orders only. Customers may choose as many flavours as they wish. Tasting fees are based on the menu price, and our flavour selection can be found under our "Custom Cakes" tab. Should a couple proceed with booking the event, a portion of the tasting fee is credited towards their final invoice. Please allow a minimum of two weeks notice for a consultation or cake tasting.

HOW LONG IN ADVANCE SHOULD I ORDER A CUSTOM CAKE?

Please allow 4-8 weeks notice for custom birthday or celebration cakes. A limited number of custom cakes are booked each weekend, and availability becomes very limited during holidays and wedding season. 

HOW LONG IN ADVANCE SHOULD I ORDER A WEDDING CAKE?

Please allow 3-12 months notice for wedding orders. A maximum of two wedding cakes are booked each weekend. 

HOW LONG IN ADVANCE SHOULD I ORDER A SIGNATURE CAKE?

Signature Cakes from our Online Shop can be ordered with a minimum of 7 days notice. Each cake has its own unique flavour and design, and cannot be customized. All Signature Cakes are 6" and have 8 servings.

DO YOU ACCOMODATE FOR DIETARY RESTRICTIONS?

We have many delicious egg free, gluten free, diary free, and vegan recipes. Kindly note, however, that our commercial facility is not designated as allergy-free. As a result, cross-contamination is possible. Anyone with severe allergies should contact a bakery that specializes in their specific dietary restriction. 

DO YOU OFFER DESSERT TABLES?

Yes! Cake and Crumb offers custom dessert packages to suit your needs. Some of the items that we offer are brownies, macarons, cookies, biscotti, cupcakes, cream puffs and eclairs. Please note that there are minimum order requirements for these items. 

WHAT ARE YOUR PRICES?

Custom cake costs vary significantly based on a number of factors (buttercream vs. fondant, 3D fondant art, cake toppers, flowers, flavour, delivery, number of tiers, etc). Custom orders start at $75.  If you're interested in a quote, feel free to contact us.

DO YOU DELIVER?

Cake & Crumb provides delivery for all wedding cakes or two tier celebration cakes. Cost is calculated based on mileage and time required for set up (approximately 1.5 hours). All other orders can be picked up from our store between 12pm-4pm.

DO I NEED TO REFRIGERATE MY CAKE?

It is recommended that all buttercream cakes be stored in the fridge, but eaten at room temperature (the butter in our cakes firm up in the cold, so don't be shy about displaying your cake during the party!). Cakes displayed at outdoor events/weddings should be placed in a cool, covered area. Warm temperatures and sunlight may cause structural issues (after all, cake is perishable!). Fondant wrapped cakes, on the other hand, may "sweat" if placed in the refrigerator. Therefore fondant cakes should be kept in a cool, dry place. 

HOW DO I TRANSPORT MY CAKE?

Custom cakes can sometimes be difficult to transport. Cake boxes should always be placed on an even surface (floor of the car, passenger's lap, etc.). They must remain cool and should not be placed in direct sunlight. Fast turns, and sudden stops/starts increase the likelihood of damage. All in all, just drive cautiously!

WHY ARE CUSTOM CAKES EXPENSIVE? 

We get asked this question a lot! 

First and foremost, you are investing in a cake made with quality ingredients (think rich butter, quality cocoa, creamy buttermilk, fresh fruit, vanilla bean paste, etc). Unlike supermarket cakes, which are made with cheap ingredients and then frozen until needed, our cakes are made using only "the best of the best". We care about what your family eats just as much as you do!  

Furthermore, you are investing in the time, knowledge, and skill of a cake decorating professional. A single tier buttercream cake takes a minimum of 2.5 hours to create. Throw on some extra tiers, delicate gumpaste flowers, detailed hand piped designs, or fondant decorations, and before you know it one cake takes an entire day! 

WHAT IMPORTANT QUESTIONS SHOULD I ASK WHEN GETTING A QUOTE?

Choosing a cake artist is like buying a house...it probably won't be the first one you see. We encourage everyone to shop around! There are so many wonderful and talented bakers in the Brant area. But when making inquiries, we recommend customers ask whether or not the business is insured and health inspected. Not only does this give you piece of mind, but it also protects you (the host) in the unlikely event one of your guests become ill.
